Más SF y los Grandes Lagos.
Llegué desde Monterrey a SF una vez más… pero esta era especial. Allá me encontraba con mi primo Santi y su novia Inés. Se habían venido de vacaciones a los States para hacerme una pequeña visita y recorrer por aquí.
Por circunstancias varias (véase suizas, Henry, Yosemite, los lagos…) solo coincidimos 3 días en Frisco. Me hubiese gustado haber pasado algo más de tiempo… pero estuvo genial y esos 3 días los aprovechamos al máximo.
En esos días Santi e Ines se convirtieron también en esponsor, me esponsorizaron el alojamiento en el Hotel Bijou. Uno de los mejores sitios en los que había dormido en este viaje. Cada habitación lleva el nombre de alguna película y toda la decoración del hotel está basada en el cine. Nos tocó la habitación “Bullitt“. Yo encantado de dormir en la que lleva el nombre de esa genial película rodada en SF allá por el 68.
Cuando nos encontramos, después de ponernos al día un poco, Santi e Inés se fueron a ver Alcatraz… yo, después de lo de Australia, ya sentía que había visto suficientes cárceles por dentro, jejej.
Me contaron que la visita estuvo entretenida, supongo que merece la pena aunque solo sea por imaginar a Sean Connery, o al mismísimo Clint Eastwood tratando de escapar de allá… por mencionar solo algunas de más celebres fugas filmadas en la isla.
Por la noche quedamos con Tuly de nuevo y cenamos por el puerto. Luego unas cervezas y a casita, que al día siguiente tocaba patear.
Y así fue. Visitamos una parte de la ruta que yo hice en mi primera visita a la ciudad: el centro, Alamo Square, Golden Gate... pero también fuimos a The Haight. El cruce de Haight con Ashbury es uno de los más famosos de SF. Allí empezó el “verano del amor” en los idealizados 60´s. Durante esa década la zona fue tomada por jóvenes desencantados del sistema, de la guerra de Vietnam y de la falta de valores de la sociedad capitalista. Por desgracia todo quedo en música y psicodelia… el cambio que esperaban (y algunos buscaron) sucedió años después, cuando la mitad de esos “jipis” acabaron trajeados y formando parte de partidos políticos o empresas que cotizan en bolsa. Pero ya hablaré de esta NoRevolución.
Hoy en día el barrio es uno de los más activos e interesantes de SF. La cultura se mezcla con la contracultura, las tiendas con la crítica al consumo y los “jipis” pasean por su pequeño reducto de un mundo que nunca quisieron cambiar.
Y de ahí entramos al Golden Gate Park. Un bonito parque para relajarte y salir un poco del barullo de la ciudad. Luego a Presidio Park y vuelta al Downtown… todo aderezado con un Pak “cuentahistorias” y muy buenas conversaciones durante el paseo.
En la noche quedamos con Martina y Cynthia para tomar algo. La idea era aguantar hasta las 4 a.m. que yo salia para el aeropuerto rumbo a Detroit… si, a Detroit.
La espera fue difícil porque en el estado de California la 1 a.m. es la hora del toque de queda. Ya no se sirve alcohol, por lo que a esa hora cierra todo. Pero siempre hay forma de seguir… aunque sea vagabundeando sin rumbo fijo. Y eso pasó. A las 4 me despedía de Santi e Inés en la puerta del hotel. Ellos volaban a LA para de allí ir a Las Vegas, donde se encontrarían con Tuly… creo que no lo pasaron mal, jeje.
Me alegro un monton de haber podido verles en SF y desde aquí les doy las gracias por la visita y todo… besos!!!.
Y yo llegué al aeropuerto, me quedé dormido en la sala de embarque y casi pierdo el vuelo… lo de siempre. Luego US Airways me tuvo un par de horas de más en el aeropuerto de Philadelphia pero no pudieron evitar que consiguiese juntarme al fin con Aitor y Loreto en Detroit… que si, Detroit.
Aitor y Loreto son 2 colegas (muy buenos) de Hortaleza. Resulta que pasaban sus vacaciones en los USA, visitando los Grandes Lagos, y estuvimos mirando la forma de coincidir allí, ya que después de 8 meses volvíamos a estar en el mismo país. No fue fácil buscar la manera de vernos, hasta que un día me encuentro con un fantástico regalo: unos billetes de ida y vuelta para ir a visitarles durante 6 días. Eso si que son amigos… diréis… pues si, yo digo lo mismo.
Y entonces, al igual que a mis primos, les he nombrado esponsors oficiales de mi viaje. Y desde aquí les doy las gracias por todo… mi madre no opina igual, porque en parte son culpables de que alargue el viaje, jejeje.
Fueron 6 días “cojonudos“, además de que esta zona no entraba para nada en mis planes. Visitamos los lagos, Detroit, Niagara Falls desde Canada, Cleveland y Chicago, lugar donde nos despediríamos; ellos volaban de nuevo a España y yo me quedaba un par de días más antes de regresar a SF.
La crónica de esos dias es de Loreto. Yo, como estuve de invitado, no me he molestado ni en escribir… mis apuntes en rojo:

“Te recogimos en Detroit (Michigan) y esa noche dormimos en Livonia a las afueras de Detroit en un Hyatt Hotel y nos fuimos a cenar unas costillas (riquiiiisimas) a Famous Dave´s “especialista en costillas” (Aitor estaba muy emocionado por cebarte 
te vimos tan delgadito… je! (eso no es cierto, si decían que estaba fuerte y todo, jeje) al día siguiente nos fuimos a Niagara Falls (parte canadiense) (Ontario), el hotel donde dormimos fue un Courtyard by Marriot estaba muy cerca de las cataratas, dimos una vuelta por la horterada de ciudad aquella, nos tomamos unas cervezas, cenamos en el Fridays y luego nos tomamos unas copas, y Aitor se recuperó esa noche! (le lubricamos bien y acabó andando con las manos el tío…). Al día siguiente nos fuimos a Cleveland (Ohio), nos alojamos en La Quinta Inn bastante alejado del centro, aunque el centro era un poco mierda, fuimos a un centro comercial a comprar un cargador para tu móvil y luego nos fuimos a cenar a un barrio que se llama Coventry Village porque leímos en una revista que había una tienda muy chula que Aitor quería ver….(por cierto! En Niagara se compró sus garras de Fredy y casi te convence para entrar en una casa del terror chunga de esas que había por todos lados… te acuerdas?) (jaja, pero me hice fuerte y no lo consiguió), bueno para llegar al barrio este paseamos durante unos diez minutos o más por un barrio de afroamericanos, que nos quitó el habla por unos minutos…(un ghetto en toda regla… el puñetero GPS, pero moló verlo y sentir como todos nos miraban por nuestro resplandeciente color blanco) en fin! llegamos a la calle, porque al final el barrio se reducía a una calle donde estaba la tienda donde quería ir Aitor y al lado el Tommy´s un restaurante vegetariano, la comida muy rica… y sana, algo raro por aquellas tierras, verdad? (la tierra del perrito y la hamburguesa…).
Al día siguiente nos fuimos a Chicago (Illinois), fuimos al hotel al lado del aeropuerto un Best Western, dejamos el coche en el aeropuerto y luego nos fuimos al centro a pasear y cenar a un restaurante pizzeria UNO donde hacen las pizzas típicas de Chicago, después de cenar volvimos al hotel y nos fuimos a un bar que estaba al lado a tomar unas copas, al día siguiente desayunamos en un Mcdonald´s (digno de contar… ejem! viviendo el capitalismo!! je)… (tengo que decir que era el único puto sitio donde comer algo en toda la zona… esto es USA!) y Aitor y yo nos marchamos muy tristes por dejarte pero muy muy contentos por haberte visto y tan bien!! (sniff, yo también me quedé triste/alegre, como tu bien dices…). Y esto es un pequeño resumen de nuestra rutilla por una zona de los grandes Lagos, por cierto! tú viste el Erie y el Michigan. (esos lagos vi yo!).
De Chicago, decir que tiene un skyline precioso, los edificios son muy chulos y que también tiene el rascacielos más alto de EEUU, el edificio Sears. En la parte norte de la ciudad tiene la playa del lago Michigan y un paseo chulo hasta el muelle, Navy Pier, donde hay algunos restaurantes y tiendecillas. Una de las calles principales Magnificient Mile con muchas tiendas de ropa de marcas en plan Serrano, nada especialmente interesante, pero que si la paseas hacia el sur vas por la Michigan Avenue y llegas a Millennium Park (me flipó), un parque chulo con fuentes curiosas y una escultura muy guapa que se llama Cloud Gate (guapiiiiisima). Otra zona chula de Chicago es el Loop, donde está el metro elevado y el distrito de teatros y poco más, porque nosotros no vimos mucho más de Chicago.”

Con anfitriones así da gusto… y a mi que me encanta tomarme en serio mi papel, mas que invitado, parecía el hijo al que sacaban de paseo, jeje.

Solo comento que el coche lo alquilaron en Alamo y los hoteles los reservaban con antelación por internet, es conveniente porque todo suele estar lleno siempre.
Cuando les despedí en el aeropuerto me quede solo de nuevo… con pena después de tan buenos encuentros en los USA.
Santi, Inés, Aitor y Loreto (en USA) y Alberto y Jorge (Australia), han sido mis vistas en este año… no se si ellos lo saben pero para mí, han hecho conmigo una pequeña etapa de mi vuelta al mundo, y espero que como eso lo recuerden, un rato estuvieron conmigo fisicamente y el resto han seguido viajandoconmigo… en mis anecdotas, en mis historias, en mis recuerdos. Gracias!!!!.
Pero esto continua y me encontraba en Chicago: mafia, ley seca, Al Capone, cabaret, jazz y pizza!.
La ciudad que inspiro la Gotham de Batman como NY inspiro la Metropolis de Superman. En Chicago se mezcla lo gótico con lo moderno, es oscura y luminosa como ningún otro lugar puede serlo a la vez… Chicago es arte y arquitectura. La ciudad de los rascacielos no esta en la costa este como muchos piensan, esa ciudad está en Illinois.
A mi me gustó bastante, tuve suerte con el buen tiempo, algo que me decían no es típico y tiene muy buenos transportes públicos. Mis días solo me alojé en el Chicago International Hostel, por 26 $ en dormitorio. No está cerca del centro pero en metro o bus te plantas en 40 minutos.
Paseé todos los lugares que menciona Loreto y alguno más, pero lo mejor es callejear, buscar callejones y pasear por ellos. Y por supuesto el Millennium Park… pude tirarme un día entero contemplando Cloud Gate y la gente que pasaba por allá… y haciendo fotos, claro.
También subí al Hancock Observatory para ver la ciudad desde el cielo… (15 $).
Chicago es una ciudad que también me gusto bastante, dicen que es fría como un congelador en invierno… pero pasearla es muy interesante. Eso si, ya no queda mafia, yo no la encontré… y se podía comprar alcohol en el mercado “blanco“.
Y el último día para ahorrar hotel y como ya no había esponsors (jeje), pues dormí en el aeropuerto antes de volver a SF vía Denver y San Jose. El avión me dejó en San Jose… pero ya sabia como ir hasta SF, autobús gratis del aeropuerto a la parada de Amtrak y luego el tren a Frisco, el mismo que tomé para ir a Monterrey.
Y aun me quedaban otros 3 días en Frisco… que ya casi parecía mi casa.
